There have been a series of discussions on EA forums about representation of minorities and marginalized groups. I will be writing several posts about this topic.
Can I just say Ben nailed it? An active influential member of the EA community just wrote a blog post entitled On Being Welcoming. Not only was it topical to many recent conversations floating around the EA forums, but it was accurate advice.
No seriously go read it. It is good advice for any group really, because what are we don't if we aren't pushing ourselves to do better? How could you be effective without gathering information from disparate groups?
